When most of us go out and purchase a newer, larger television or a state of the art surround sound system, we do so with action films in mind. Whether it is the raw power of a fighter jet taking off from an air craft carrier or a light sabre battle on board the Death Star, there is no experience quite like a good action film. While endless discussions could be held on what is the best action film ever, these are the top ten worldwide grossing action movies of all time.
#1 Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King – For decades, Hollywood claimed that the famed Lord of the Rings trilogy was simply too grand, too spectacular and too over the top to be realistically adapted from the original books. Turns out, you just needed to wait until modern special effects were capable of what they are today. This film is currently only one of three movies in history to bring in over one billion dollars, although it will likely have company soon. The story revolves around a group of misfits who must destroy an enchanted ring to save their world.
#2 Pirates of the Caribbean – Dead Man’s Chest – The second addition of the Pirates franchise has taken in just over a billion dollars, and combined, is one of the most successful trilogies of all time. This edition centers around Jack Sparrow’s quest to obtain the heart of Davy Jones so that he may avoid eternity as a slave.
#3 The Dark Knight – When you consider just how poorly the final few Batman films of the 90’s performed at the box office, it is amazing to think that a new cast of characters has completely revived it. Throw in the accidental death of Heath Ledger and you have the hottest film of 2008 and one on the verge of breaking $1 billion, as well. The plot here involves Batman’s quest to stop The Joker’s madman schemes.
#4 Pirates of the Caribbean – At World’s End – Yet another Pirates film, this one grossing $958 million, is situated at #4. At World’s End features many of the same characters from the other two films, including an alliance between the previous film’s villains. Along with the Star Wars films and the Lord of the Rings series, the Pirates trilogy is the highest grossing set of films in modern history.
#5 Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace – If you were to ask a room full of people which Star Wars film has grossed the most money, this one would probably rank dead last. From Jar Jar Binks to endless senate roll calls, the Phantom Menace has become a punch line for bloated, oversized and grandiose action films. Despite all that, The Phantom Menace took in $922 million. This chapter in the Star Wars saga begins the tale of Anakin Skywalker and the coming Clone Wars.
#6 The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers – With over $921 million brought in to this point, the second Lord of the Rings film ranks #6 all time amongst action films. This is the second chapter in the continuing story of Frodo and his gang’s quest to destroy The One True Ring.
#7 Jurassic Park – There might not have been a bigger action film during the 1990’s than Jurassic Park, the story of an island theme park that featured real dinosaurs brought back to life thanks to cloning technology. Jurassic Park has brought in $919 million to date.
#8 Spider-Man 3 – As you can see by this list, there is a reason why so many movie studios pump out sequel after sequel. The third instalment of the Spider-Man series has brought in $885 million and also ranks as one of the highest grossing trilogies of all time. In this edition, Spider-Man must battle an evil force that attempts to take over his mind and body.
#9 Lord of the Rings – The Fellowship of the Ring – We complete the Lord of the Rings trilogy with the original film, The Fellowship of the Ring. This film shows the origins of how Frodo and his group of misfits began their journey. The film currently ranks #16 all time in gross and #9 amongst action films with $860 million in revenue.
#10 Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith – In this most recent Star Wars film, we see how Anakin Skywalker completes his transformation into Darth Vader and how the empire as we came to know it in the original three films came to be. This film has taken in $848 million to date. |
