Top 10 Horror Films That Will Make Your Skin Crawl

For some people, the idea of feeling their heart race, their palms sweat and having the hair on the back of their necks stand up is the epitome of a good time. Chances are, these folks love a good horror movie. Whether it is the latest slasher film or a good psychological horror flick, there is nothing like seeing a scary movie on a first date or as an excuse to cuddle up with someone you love. The following is a list of the top ten highest rated horror films on Internet Movie Database.

#1 Psycho – With a rock solid rating of 8.7/10 based on over 100,000 votes, this suspense classic directed by the incomparable Alfred Hitchcock ranks as the most popular horror movie of all time. Ironically, if this film were released today, it likely wouldn’t even be classified as horror, but for 1960, this was as scary as it got. The story revolves around an innkeeper played by Anthony Perkins who in controlled by his mother, with disastrous results.

#2 Alien – Not only did Alien show Hollywood that a big budget (11 million in 1979 dollars) horror film could deliver, it helped to revolutionize special effects, as well. This epic starred Sigourney Weaver as a space explorer responding to an SOS on a distant planet. What they end up finding is beyond anyone’s comprehension.

#3 The Shining – Although The Shining is considered one of the scariest movies of all time, there is still a large group of people that despise this film due to the fact that it has so little to do with the Stephen King book it is based on. Regardless, the insane mind of Stanley Kubrick brought to life the story of a haunted hotel (Stephen King has said in many interviews that he finds hotels terrifying places) and the caretaker family that finds itself being torn apart by an evil force.

#4 Aliens – It took seven long years for the long awaited sequel to the hit Alien film to make it to the big screen, but as it turns out, it was worth the wait. This time, Sigourney Weaver heads back to the same planet with a military unit to rescue a colony that has ceased to communicate with the outside world. This film comes in at #65 in the IMDB all time top 250.

#5 Let The Right One In – This Norwegian film is new to most people and involves a young boy who falls in love with a girl, who just happens to be a vampire. From 2008, this highly acclaimed thriller/horror has been the darling of the film festival circuit but it is unknown if it will ever see a wide release in theatres.

#6 Jaws – The film that almost broke Stephen Spielberg but ended up making him a star, the story of Jaws is based on the Peter Benchley novel of the same name about a killer shark stalking the water off of a quiet New England town. Don’t let the poor quality sequels turn you off from this classic film, if you haven’t seen it, you need to.

#7 Les Diaboliques – This French film from 1955 is a classic ghost story about a pair of women who murder a man, but their plans don’t quite work out the way they wanted. One of the scariest films of its time, it holds up amazingly well over fifty years later. If you love classic horror films, this is an absolute must see.

#8 The Thing – John Carpenter’s masterpiece about a shape shifting entity that makes it home in the arctic and has the ability to take the shape of whomever it kills. The Thing combines expertly crafted suspense, plenty of jump scenes and just enough gore to keep the slasher fans interested.

#9 Bride of Frankenstein – Another classic horror film, this one from 1935, the Bride of Frankenstein was, and still is, a bit controversial. Some people view this sequel as one of the finest horror masterpieces ever made, while some view the rather over-the-top acting as a complete parody. No matter which side of the fence you are on, this is a must see film for any fan of classic cinema.

#10 Frankenstein – The 1931 classic Frankenstein was one of Boris Karloff’s biggest hits and one of the most popular films in movie history. We all know the story by now, a mad scientist creates a monster that ends up throwing off his maker’s control to explore the world on his own. While it may not make you jump out of your seat like it did for people 70 years ago, it still remains a fantastic and well made motion picture to this day.
